On July 13, 2023, at about 4:30 p.m., officers responded to reports of gunfire at a residence on Harmon Street in Forest City, North Carolina. They found 29-year-old Brandon Gerard Holland in the front yard with multiple gunshot wounds; he was pronounced dead at the scene. A second victim, Haley Elizabeth Davis, also suffered multiple gunshot wounds and was airlifted to Spartanburg Regional Hospital, where she was expected to recover.

Investigators say the suspected shooter was described as a Black male in dark clothing who arrived on foot and fled toward Hill Street, believed to have left in a gray four-door Ford Fusion. Police linked this attack to gunfire at a home on Chase High Road the previous day, July 12, when no one was injured; physical evidence connected the two incidents. In December 2023 a grand jury indicted Zachariah Da’Vine Hines for first-degree murder in Holland’s death, and authorities arrested Joshua Adam King Jr. on a charge of accessory after the fact.
