Thomas Sherwood, 41, a senior manager at an environmental engineering firm in Pocatello, Idaho, was found dead in his basement on September 3, 2000. His wife, Stephanie Sherwood, initially reported the death as a suicide, but investigators concluded otherwise after determining he had been shot twice in the chest with a shotgun from about eight feet away. The scene was judged to have been staged to mislead responders and the death was reclassified as a homicide.
Investigators publicly identified Stephanie Sherwood and her brother as persons of interest and focused on the possibility of a financial motive: Thomas stood to inherit roughly $400,000. A search warrant was executed at the brother-in-law’s home in 2001; results were not released. Authorities say they believe they know who is responsible but lack sufficient evidence for charges, and report that polygraph offers to the suspects were declined on counsel’s advice. Stephanie Sherwood later offered a $10,000 reward for information leading to an arrest.
The case remains unsolved and no arrests have been made. If anyone knew Thomas, his movements around September 3, 2000, or has information about who might have staged the scene, please come forward.
