On the evening of April 29, 2023, at about 9:30 p.m., 40-year-old Richard Callander was fatally shot in a drive-by outside his home at 601 Ghent Street in Windsor, North Carolina. Multiple shots were fired from a passing vehicle while Callander was among a group of people; another person, Derrick Vaughan, was injured but not in life-threatening condition.
The shooting was the sixth gun-related fatality in Bertie County since the start of 2023, and Callander’s family, especially his children, have publicly appealed for an end to the violence and spoken about their loss. The Windsor Police Department, assisted by the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation, is handling the case; no arrests or suspect details have been released.
If anyone has information that could help the investigation, contact the Windsor Police Department at (252) 794-3121.
