On April 26, 2023, at about 4:45 p.m., deputies found 37-year-old Desmond Lamar Sloan of Chesapeake, Virginia, deceased in the front seat of an SUV near Kincaid Drive and Ted Court, off Highway 48 in Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina. The initial investigation determined Sloan had been fatally shot.

On May 3, 2023, authorities arrested 41-year-old Robin Lee Jeffrey of Roanoke Rapids and charged Jeffrey with first-degree murder in connection with Sloan’s death. Jeffrey was held without bond pending a court appearance scheduled for May 24, 2023. Investigators also sought 28-year-old Javon Antonio Sessons, known as Woo-Woo, of Roanoke Rapids; Sessons was charged with possession of a firearm by a felon for events occurring after the homicide and was reported to frequent areas around Carolina Rest Home and Highway 48.
