William Nathaniel Raynor, 44, was found dead near the edge of Hayes Street close to Railroad Street in Ahoskie on March 11, 2023. Officers and Hertford County EMS responded about 12:29 a.m. and discovered him unresponsive; an autopsy determined he died from a gunshot wound. The Ahoskie Police Department and the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation opened an inquiry into the circumstances of the shooting.

Authorities asked the public for help from anyone who saw Raynor on March 10 or during the late hours before his death, or who noticed anything unusual in the area. As of the latest available update, no arrests have been announced and no suspects have been publicly identified. The investigation remains active and law enforcement continues to seek leads.
