Montrez Vonner, 34, was fatally shot in the early morning hours of March 11, 2018, on the 700 block of North Hickory Street in Champaign, Illinois. Police responded about 1:22 AM after multiple reports of gunfire near a local club and witnesses said a verbal argument preceded the shooting. Vonner was critically injured and died shortly after at a nearby hospital.
Three other people were wounded — two women, 18 and 23, from Rantoul, and a 23-year-old man from Champaign — all with non-life-threatening injuries. The shooting occurred near Hickory and Vine Streets, close to the American Legion Post. Police have not disclosed whether there was more than one shooter or if Vonner was specifically targeted, and investigators said many witnesses were reluctant to come forward. The Champaign Police Department asked the community for anonymous tips through Crime Stoppers and offered rewards for information leading to arrests.
If anyone who was near Hickory and Vine the night of March 11 has information that could help the investigation, please contact Crime Stoppers or the Champaign Police Department.
