On January 29, 2023, at about 6:30 p.m., rapid rifle fire was reported near Elm Street and Martin Luther King Jr. Drive in Tarboro, North Carolina. Officers found a known vehicle fleeing the scene; it was later abandoned near Roberson and Clark Drives and the driver was identified. Two 19-year-old males arrived at ECU Health Edgecombe Hospital; TyKevian Deontae Johnson of Princeville died of his injuries at the hospital. The other 19-year-old, from Greenville, was treated and released.

Police secured the victims’ vehicle and found a stolen handgun and an AR-style pistol. Investigators say the vehicle was traveling on the 900 block of Martin Luther King Jr. Drive when it was struck multiple times by gunfire from people standing in a nearby yard; the shooters fled immediately. No arrests have been reported.
