On January 9, 2023, at about 10:30 p.m., officers responded to a 911 report of a shooting in the 300 block of South Estes Drive Extension, a public housing community in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. Responding officers found 27-year-old K’son Lamoriquia Thorpe of Oxford, North Carolina, in the parking lot; Thorpe had sustained a fatal gunshot wound.

Investigators later identified and arrested three people in connection with the killing. On January 20, 2023, 20-year-old Carrboro resident Sarod Folly was taken into custody and charged with conspiracy to commit armed robbery, conspiracy to commit homicide, and accessory after the fact to homicide; two juveniles were also arrested, though their identities and charges were not released under state juvenile privacy rules. Police said the case was one of several violent incidents in Chapel Hill around that time and that the investigation into Thorpe’s death remains ongoing.
