On January 5, 2023, officers from the Mount Olive Police Department responded to a reported shooting at 242 Franklin Street and found 33-year-old Anthony Fitzgerald Price in the passenger seat of a vehicle with gunshot wounds. Wayne County Emergency Medical Services pronounced Price deceased at the scene.

Following an investigation, authorities identified 28-year-old Mount Olive resident Tavoris Javon Mathis as a suspect and charged him with an open count of murder and three counts of discharging a firearm into an occupied vehicle. Warrants were issued; Mathis surrendered on January 7, 2023, at the Wayne County Magistrate’s Office in Goldsboro and was held in the Wayne County Jail without bond.
