Akil Jones, 33, was killed during a chaotic gunfire exchange after a summer block party in Philadelphia’s Carroll Park neighborhood in the early hours of July 21, 2024. The gathering of more than 100 people was disrupted around 2 a.m. on the 1200 block of North Alden Street when an argument between Akil and another man, Tahir Shoatz, became physical and then escalated as Shoatz reached for a gun. Akil’s brother Amir intervened, and investigators say at least six different firearms were discharged.
Officers found Akil lying in the street, dead of a gunshot wound to his torso. The shooting also killed his brother Rashie Jones, 29, and their friend Sakayi Robinson, 23; six other people, ages 26 to 30, were wounded and survived. Shoatz was identified among the wounded, arrested, and charged; Amir Jones fled and was later located by U.S. Marshals and charged.
Anyone who knew Akil or has information about the July 21, 2024 shooting is asked to contact the Philadelphia Police Department at 215-686-8477.
