An 18-year-old recent graduate of Greeneville High School, Charles Dabney was killed in an early-morning shooting in downtown Johnson City on September 8, 2024. The shooting happened near Majestic Park around 2 a.m., when police found two people with gunshot wounds. Both were taken to a local hospital; Dabney died at Johnson City Memorial Hospital and the other victim was treated and released.

The Johnson City Police Department opened an investigation with assistance from the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation and the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation. Three suspects have been arrested: 34-year-old Tyron Bland of Greene County, charged with aggravated assault, reckless endangerment, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon; 19-year-old Jayden Smith, charged with aggravated assault and reckless endangerment; and 22-year-old Katy Scruggs, arrested as an accessory after the fact. Smith and Scruggs were reported to be in Asheville and awaiting extradition.

Charles was remembered as a bright young man with an infectious smile and a protective nature. Are there witnesses or anyone with information about the events near Majestic Park that morning who can help investigators?
