On October 7, 2017, 18-year-old Manuel Mendoza was fatally shot in Chicago’s Pilsen neighborhood. Mendoza was standing near the driver’s side of a vehicle on the 1800 block of South Throop Street at about 10:50 a.m. when a gunman approached and opened fire. Mendoza suffered four gunshot wounds to his back and armpit and was pronounced dead at the scene alongside the vehicle’s driver, 20-year-old Alexis Ceron-Salgado, who sustained seven gunshot wounds to his neck and face.
Authorities identified 23-year-old Derek Paige as the assailant and said he fled west on 18th Place. Prosecutors described the killing as retaliatory after an incident the previous night in Fuller Park in which two men affiliated with Paige’s gang were shot and seriously wounded. Investigators reported Mendoza and Ceron-Salgado were members of the rival La Raza gang. A police-operated POD camera recorded the shooting and showed the shooter touching the vehicle’s fender; a left-thumb fingerprint from that area matched Paige. A nearby witness also identified him as the shooter, and Paige was arrested and held without bail.
Did anyone in Pilsen see activity on the morning of October 7 that could add context to this shooting?
