Gary Douglas Cameron, 55, was shot and killed at his home on Rankin Hill Road in Newport, Tennessee, on September 6, 2023. The shooting occurred during an argument at the front door after his son, Garrett Cameron, reportedly appeared at the residence and demanded the keys to a vehicle. Gary was struck while standing in his living room and died from the gunshot.
After the shooting Garrett allegedly threatened others in the house, demanded the car keys and then fled in one of his father’s vehicles. Deputies from the Cocke County Sheriff’s Office captured him a short distance away and booked him into the Blount County Detention Center. He was charged with first-degree murder, especially aggravated robbery, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, reckless endangerment with a deadly weapon, aggravated assault, theft of property over $1,000, and unlawful drug paraphernalia; bond was set at $2 million and an initial court appearance was scheduled for September 22, 2023. Family members described Gary as generous and well liked in the community.
Are there details about the timeline at the house or witnesses who haven’t been heard that could clarify what happened that evening?
