Dr. Benjamin Mauck, a 43-year-old orthopedic surgeon who specialized in hand, wrist, and elbow surgery, was shot and killed while seeing patients at the Campbell Clinic in Collierville, Tennessee, on Tuesday, July 11, 2023. The shooting happened at approximately 2 p.m. in an exam room where Dr. Mauck was alone with a patient; a nurse said the gunman produced a pistol from his waistband and fired three times, striking Mauck in the neck, chest, and abdomen.
Police described the encounter as targeted and one-on-one. Witnesses and records indicate the suspect had been at the clinic for several hours before the shooting but fled immediately after; Collierville police arrested him within five minutes of the initial 911 call. The suspect, identified as 29-year-old Larry Pickens of Memphis, had been a patient of the clinic and was receiving treatment from Dr. Mauck. Pickens was charged with first-degree murder and aggravated assault and was booked with bond set at $1.2 million. Reports note prior concerning behavior at another clinic location and a history of mental health issues, including schizophrenia, with claims he had not been taking medication.
Dr. Mauck had been with the Campbell Clinic since 2012 and also worked at Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital; he is survived by his wife and two young children. Does anyone who knew Dr. Mauck or was at the clinic that day have additional details to share?
