Mickey Yana Wykle Barbely, 66, was killed at her Talbott, Tennessee, home on the evening of July 8, 2023. A 911 call placed from the Marie Street residence at about 6:59 p.m. came from her husband, 69-year-old Charles Barbely, who told the dispatcher he had shot his wife. Deputies from the Hamblen County Sheriff’s Office found Charles on the front porch; he set a handgun down and was taken into custody without incident. Mickey Barbely was pronounced dead at the scene.

A respected adjunct professor at Walters State Community College and Director of Research for the Jackie Lyles Group, she was remembered for her dedication to students and her family. Charles Barbely was arrested and charged with first-degree murder; a court later denied him bond. A memorial service was held to honor her life.

If anyone knew Mickey, her routines, or saw anything unusual in Talbott on July 8, please come forward with information.
