Damon Alexander ’Bubba’ Tate, 36, was fatally shot on April 4, 2023, during a confrontation on Nickajack Circle in Jasper at about 2:30 p.m. Tate and Justin W. Rogers had gone to the home of Stephen Tyler Moore, where a physical altercation involved Moore and an unidentified person. Moore fired multiple shots; Tate died at the scene. Moore later surrendered and was taken into custody by the Marion County Sheriff’s Office and charged with criminal homicide. Rogers was arrested and booked into the Marion County Jail on stalking charges.

Family described Tate as a devoted father of three who liked fishing and had a ready sense of humor. His sister, Crystal Layne, said the deadly turn of events was unexpected and devastating. Funeral services were held April 8, 2023, with burial in the Layne Family Cemetery.
