On October 4, 2024, at about 12:43 a.m., deputies found cousins Jeremiah Rios Aguilera and Giovanni Aburto Lopez on the 700 block of Carlton Road near Watsonville, California, both suffering gunshot wounds. Both men, each 21, were pronounced dead at the scene. The location is described as a mainly agricultural area with few nearby residences.

Detectives say the shooting appears to have been a targeted attack and are trying to determine why Aguilera and Lopez were at that spot so late and what led to their deaths.
