Terrance Johnson was 18 when he was fatally shot in Chicago on September 7, 2017. His killing came as the city crossed a grim threshold that year, recording its 500th homicide by early September and underscoring a surge of gun violence that hit many neighborhoods.

Community groups have urged expanded social services and intervention programs to offer alternatives for at-risk youth, but 2017 remained one of the deadliest years for the city.
