On July 2, 2024, at about 6:30 p.m., Corcoran police found 40-year-old Jason Pico unresponsive in a crashed vehicle near Dairy and Hanna Avenues. He suffered a gunshot wound and was pronounced dead at the scene. Investigators determined Pico had been shot before the crash.

Investigators identified 27-year-old Alex Barrera as the primary suspect. On July 10, the Central Valley Regional SWAT team executed a search warrant at Barrera’s apartment on the 1700 block of Dairy Avenue and arrested him; he was booked into Kings County Jail on a murder charge and held without bail. On July 16 Barrera pleaded not guilty at arraignment. The motive has not been disclosed and the investigation is ongoing.
