A large, violent fight at Oak Shores Day Use Area on Lake Berryessa’s western shore in Napa County ended in a fatal shooting on June 8, 2024. Two sizable groups who reportedly did not know each other became involved in a melee during which 39-year-old Vallejo resident Andres Fabian Sandoval Garcia was shot and killed. Several other people were stabbed; at least two injured individuals were airlifted to local hospitals.

The person alleged to have shot Garcia is 25-year-old Gabriel James Chavez of American Canyon. Chavez reportedly retrieved a firearm from his vehicle during the fight, fired at Garcia, and then tried to flee. He was taken into custody north of the lake after sustaining stab wounds in the brawl and was later airlifted for treatment. After recovery, Chavez was charged with first-degree murder, assault with a semi-automatic rifle, and additional assault counts. The Napa County Sheriff’s Office is continuing the investigation and has asked anyone with information or video of the incident to come forward.
