On May 2, 2024, at about 3:15 p.m., 35-year-old Greg Atkinson was fatally shot in his Marysville neighborhood on Remington Way. A neighbor, alerted by gunfire and Atkinson’s calls for help, found him with gunshot wounds; he was taken to Rideout Hospital and later died. The Yuba County Sheriff’s Office identified 45-year-old Sunny Bhavra as the primary suspect. Deputies located Bhavra and a roughly ten-minute pursuit ended when his vehicle crashed near Erle Road east of Griffith Avenue; he was taken into custody and booked on homicide, felony evading, and multiple weapon offenses.

Atkinson, born September 15, 1988, in Yuba City, was a lifelong Yuba-Sutter resident and is survived by his wife Joelle, their young daughter Kaylee, three sisters Stacy Burgeson, Lisa Furr and Melissa Callison, and other family. A celebration of life was held May 24, 2024, and a GoFundMe was set up to help with funeral and related expenses. Authorities have not released a motive and the investigation remains ongoing.
