Jenny Carolina Martínez Bejarano, 36, was killed in a shooting at El Torero Bar in Watsonville, California, in the early hours of November 21, 2023. The exchange of gunfire began around 1:07 a.m. after an argument between two patrons; one man, identified as 36-year-old Gerardo Hernandez Herrera, opened fire upon entering the bar and 47-year-old Sergio Ramos Carranza returned fire. The brief volley of shots — about three and a half seconds — struck Jenny in the chest. She died at the hospital despite receiving medical attention. Three other people suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

Carranza later turned himself in and was arrested; he was booked on two counts of homicide, though the Monterey County District Attorney noted the doctrine of transferred intent and said self-defense could apply when a defender’s justifiable shots unintentionally kill a bystander. Carranza was charged with a felony for carrying a loaded firearm in public while the shooting remains under investigation. Jenny had immigrated from Colombia two years earlier and was working as a waitress to support her two daughters; her family in Colombia has been seeking emergency visas to attend her funeral and assist with repatriation.

Does anyone have information about that night at El Torero Bar or about Jenny’s last shift that could help the ongoing review?
