Andres Julian Chavez was 17 when he was fatally shot outside his home in the 6900 block of 22nd Street in Rio Linda, California, on September 18, 2023 at about 2:15 a.m. He had been pursuing high school through an independent study program and hoped to join the military. Chavez was found unresponsive with at least one gunshot wound and was pronounced dead at the scene after first responders tried lifesaving measures.

The Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office says the shooting was believed to be a targeted attack. A 15-year-old male was arrested the next day and initially held on gun charges; the suspect was later charged with murder in February 2024. Because of juvenile questioning restrictions, investigators said they could not immediately question the suspect, which complicated efforts to establish whether others were involved. Chavez’s family and the community organized fundraisers to cover funeral costs and unpaid bills as they seek answers.
