On September 4, 2023, in Harbor City, California, 21-year-old Carlos Loera and his partner, 18-year-old Ashley Guzman were seated in their parked vehicle on the 1000 block of 253rd Street when an assailant approached and opened fire. Both adults were struck; Loera was pronounced dead at the scene and Guzman later died at a nearby hospital. Their one-year-old child, secured in a rear car seat, was also hit by gunfire but survived after hospital treatment.

In January 2024 Los Angeles Police Department officers arrested 20-year-old Dion Johnson of Wilmington and charged him with murder and attempted murder in connection with the shootings; he is being held in lieu of $13.4 million bail. Investigators say Johnson is also connected to the September 30, 2023, fatal shooting of 17-year-old Joseph Saldana at a family party in San Pedro, which left three others wounded and hospitalized in stable condition. The motive for these attacks remains under investigation.
