On August 30, 2023, at about 10:30 p.m., Union City police responded to a reported shooting in the 33500 block of Seventh Street and found 38-year-old resident Michael McNack with life-threatening injuries. He was taken to a hospital and pronounced dead. The incident was initially described as isolated and not an immediate threat to the community.

After a nine-month investigation, authorities arrested three men on May 30, 2024: Joseph Rosales, 31, of San Jose; Erik Anthony Harding, 39, of Hayward; and Wilbert Ard, 37, of Fairfield. They were charged with murder and conspiracy. The arrests were carried out through a coordinated operation that included SWAT teams executing arrest and search warrants across the Bay Area and resulted in recovery of five firearms. The Union City Police Department said it continues to investigate and asked anyone with additional information to come forward.
