On June 26, 2023, at about 2:20 p.m., Vacaville police responded to multiple reports of gunshots on the 1100 block of Cinnabar Way. Officers found 26-year-old Fairfield resident Jayro Magana with critical gunshot wounds; he was transported to a local hospital and later died from those injuries. Witnesses saw a man running from the scene.

About a mile away on Somerville Drive, officers detained 20-year-old Vallejo resident David Lamont Herschel, who matched the witness description. A firearm recovered near Nut Tree Road and Youngsdale Drive is believed to be connected to the shooting. Investigators say an altercation occurred between Magana and Herschel before the shooting, indicating the attack was not random. Herschel was arrested and booked on charges including homicide, assault with a deadly weapon, and carrying a loaded firearm.
