On June 15, 2023, 37-year-old Amazon truck driver Ilkhom Shodiev was fatally shot while driving northbound on Interstate 5 near Lathrop, California. The shooting caused him to lose control of his vehicle; the truck veered off the freeway, struck two parked cars, and crashed into a building. Shodiev was taken to a local hospital and later died of his injuries.
California Highway Patrol investigators used surveillance footage, witness statements, and public tips to identify 29-year-old Andrew Christopher Watson of Manteca as the primary suspect. Officers executed a search warrant at Watson’s residence on June 24, 2023, and arrested him without incident. He was booked on a charge of first-degree murder with an enhancement for intentional discharge of a firearm and arraigned on June 27, 2023; the judge told him the charges could carry up to 50 years to life if convicted. The motive remains unclear, and investigators have not said whether a firearm was recovered.
Shodiev, originally from Tajikistan, lived in Charlotte, North Carolina, with his wife and two young children and was remembered by family and friends as a principled provider. Does anyone who traveled I-5 near Lathrop on June 15 have dashcam footage or information that could help the investigation?
