Ashley Waters, 23, was fatally shot on June 11, 2023, in Manteca, California. She had been waiting in her car near the 1300 block of West Yosemite Avenue to pick up her boyfriend from work at Rite Aid when individuals approached, demanded her keys and wallet, and opened fire as she tried to flee. Waters drove a short distance to a nearby Planet Fitness seeking help but succumbed to her injuries.

Police linked the suspects to an earlier carjacking in Oakland that same day and to a stolen 2007 gray Toyota Camry identified as the vehicle used in the Manteca shooting. In the early hours of June 12, deputies located the Camry on Interstate 880 near Hayward; a subsequent pursuit ended in San Leandro when the car lost control, crashed into a tree and caught fire. Two male front-seat occupants were found unresponsive and a 14-year-old girl in the back was hospitalized. A firearm was recovered from the vehicle, but it was not yet clear if it was the weapon used in Manteca.

Family described Waters as kind-hearted; a vigil was held in front of the Planet Fitness where she sought help. If anyone has information about the shooting or the suspects, please share what is known.
