Seventeen-year-old Justina JoAnn Stubbe of Oroville was killed in a drive-by shooting in Chico on May 6, 2023. The shooting happened about 3:30 a.m. near the 1000 block of Columbus Avenue, where a party was underway. A vehicle drove by and unknown suspects fired multiple rounds into the crowd; Justina was taken by friends to Enloe Hospital and died of her injuries. Five other people, ages 17 to 21, suffered non-life-threatening wounds.
Investigators later described the attack as gang-related and said it followed an earlier altercation at the party in which the suspects had been asked to leave. On May 22, 2023, two men were charged: 18-year-old Oscar Sebastian Castrejon-Sanchez of Chico and his cousin, 21-year-old Marcos Tiny Douglas-Ayala of Hamilton City, each with one count of murder and five counts of attempted murder. A third man, 33-year-old Alejandro Douglas, was reported as wanted and remained at large.
Justina’s family and the Oroville community held vigils and raised funds after her death; she was remembered as kind, funny, smart, and family-oriented. If anyone has information about the shooting or knew Justina, please come forward to the authorities.
