On April 21, 2023, at about 9:31 p.m., Tracy police responded to reports of gunfire near North Central Avenue and First Street and found 23-year-old Tracy resident Khyrei Ahmad Currie in the 100 block of East First Street with gunshot wounds. Emergency crews transported Currie to a local hospital, where he died during treatment. Investigators later recovered evidence at McDonald Park in the 100 block of Central Avenue that linked the park to the shooting.

TPD detectives from the General Investigations Unit led the inquiry and described the incident as an isolated shooting. After a year-long probe, two suspects were identified: 24-year-old Juan Santos of Tracy and 18-year-old Adrian Darbison of Manteca. On May 14, 2024, coordinated searches and arrests were carried out at multiple locations; Santos and Darbison were arrested and booked on murder and conspiracy charges. The investigation remains ongoing.
