On January 31, 2023, at about 11:45 a.m., 24-year-old Selma Police Officer Gonzalo Carrasco was fatally shot while responding to a report of a suspicious person in the 2600 block of Pine Street in Selma, California. A homeowner had flagged down Officer Carrasco; as he approached the man, later identified as 23-year-old Nathaniel Dixon, Dixon opened fire and struck Carrasco multiple times. Carrasco was taken to Community Regional Medical Center in Fresno, where he underwent surgery and died from his injuries.
About 25 minutes after the shooting, a Fresno County Sheriff’s deputy located Dixon near Fig and Sequoia streets and took him into custody without further incident. A .223 caliber assault-style ghost gun was recovered nearby. Dixon, described in the report as a known gang member with prior charges including illegal firearms possession and robbery, was on probation under California’s AB 109 at the time and was charged with first-degree murder with special circumstances for the killing of a police officer, personal and intentional discharge of a firearm causing death, and being a felon in possession of a firearm.
Officer Carrasco had served with the Selma Police Department since May 2021 and was expecting his first child with his girlfriend. The community held vigils and memorials to honor him. Did anyone in Selma have contact with Officer Carrasco or information about the events that morning?
