Day’shaun Colen, 32, was shot and killed at the Bravo Hookah Lounge in Abilene, Texas, in the early hours of October 27, 2024. The lounge had reached capacity during a Halloween-themed event and a crowd formed outside. Colen was at the front holding open a staff door when a push to enter led to an altercation between him and a security guard employed by Apex Tactical Security.
Surveillance footage and witness accounts say a bystander grabbed Colen around the neck in an effort to restrain him. At that moment 51-year-old security guard Teddy Lee Mills drew his firearm and shot Colen twice. Colen was taken to a hospital by friends and died later that day. Witnesses reported Colen was unarmed; the bystander who had him restrained said he did not see any weapons and did not believe Colen needed to be shot. Surveillance footage appeared to show the bystander had control of Colen when Mills fired.
Mills was arrested October 30, 2024, charged with first-degree murder, booked into the Taylor County Jail and later released on a $250,000 bond. A Taylor County grand jury returned an indictment on December 12, 2024. Family members have publicly demanded accountability, and the case has prompted discussion about security protocols and use of force by private security at local venues.
If anyone witnessed the crowd outside the lounge that night or has additional footage, please share what was seen.
