Clifton Lee Johnson, 38, was fatally shot on July 29, 2024, while visiting a female friend at her apartment on Cypress Plaza Parkway in Cypress, Texas. Johnson, a musician from Orlando who had recently arrived in Houston, was hiding in a bedroom when the friend’s estranged husband, Kerry Cunningham, arrived and forced entry by kicking the door and using a screwdriver. An argument followed and Cunningham allegedly shot Johnson in the face. First responders found Cunningham administering aid to Johnson; Johnson was taken to Memorial Hermann Downtown Hospital in critical condition and later died.
Cunningham was detained at the scene, interviewed by investigators and charged with capital murder; he was booked into the Harris County Jail and remained in custody with bond set at $200,000 as of August 2024. Family and friends remembered Johnson as a genuine, soulful musician who shared his music across Central Florida.
If anyone has information about Johnson’s visit to the apartment that day or the events leading up to the shooting, please come forward.
