Patrick Ray Cantu Jr., 22, was fatally shot on July 18, 2024, at the La Armada Housing complex in Corpus Christi. Police were called to the 3800 block of Brandywine Court just before 8:30 PM and found Cantu with multiple gunshot wounds; he was taken to a hospital and later died. Cantu, born February 18, 2002 in Houston, had been a Golden Gloves champion in the 140-lb. Junior division in 2019.

Family say the shooting followed an altercation with neighbors while Cantu was moving furniture into an apartment; his stepmother Amanda Rubio reported the argument escalated and someone pulled a gun. An affidavit says Cantu was shot in the face. The Corpus Christi Police Department interviewed witnesses and on July 26 announced arrests of 41-year-old Rodolfo Silvas and 21-year-old Xavier Reyna, who were charged with murder in connection with the shooting.
