Joseph Duane Stanczyk, 52, was fatally shot on July 16, 2024, after a road rage confrontation on East U.S. Highway 290 near County Line Road in Elgin. Stanczyk, known as Standude, was driving a blue Chevrolet Malibu and is described as a Marine Corps veteran who worked for Applied Materials. He is survived by his wife Alicia, children, parents and other family.

According to reports, both Stanczyk and the other driver, 34-year-old Fabian Salas in a black GMC Sierra, were seen speeding and cutting each other off before stopping at a traffic light. Stanczyk exited his vehicle and approached Salas’s truck, a physical altercation followed, and Salas allegedly produced a 9mm semi-automatic handgun and shot Stanczyk in the head. Salas remained at the scene, was arrested, and charged with first-degree murder; bond was set at $1 million. Court papers say Salas admitted to the shooting. The men did not know each other prior to the encounter.
