On July 16, 2024, at about 11:50 a.m., 20-year-old Markel May was shot and killed in Marshall, Texas. The shooting happened near Lafayette and East Grand Avenue after a white Nissan stopped at a red light and occupants of a maroon vehicle pulled alongside and opened fire. May, a passenger, died at the scene; the Nissan’s driver suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to a hospital.

Marshall police arrested 18-year-old Curtis White Jr., a Marshall resident, on charges of murder, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, and deadly conduct with a firearm. Authorities say White and May were known to each other. White was held on a $1.2 million bond. May’s name had also come up in an August 2021 incident in Marshall when he was among six people arrested after a shooting near Price T. Young Elementary School; no one was injured then.

Anyone with information about the July 16 shooting is asked to contact Marshall law enforcement.
