Ruben Santibanez Arzola, 17, was shot and killed in the early morning hours of January 14, 2024, near the intersection of Walnut Street and Plano Road in Garland, Texas. Garland Police found Arzola with multiple gunshot wounds and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Detectives identified two suspects after witness interviews and surveillance review: 19-year-old Carlos Hernandez and 18-year-old Maria Lopez, both from Garland. Authorities say the shooting arose from a personal dispute between Arzola and Hernandez, and that Lopez allegedly acted as an accomplice. Both were arrested on January 20, 2024; Hernandez was booked on a first-degree murder charge with bail set at $500,000, and Lopez was charged with conspiracy to commit murder with bail set at $250,000.

The arrests were reported to have brought some relief to the community, though the loss remains profound. If anyone saw activity near Walnut Street and Plano Road in the early hours of January 14 or has information about Arzola’s movements that morning, please come forward.
