On December 6, 2023, 22-year-old Khadija Derry was fatally shot while sitting in her car outside her family’s home in Converse, Texas. Two people approached the vehicle and fired about 20 rounds, striking Derry multiple times; she died at the scene. Investigators later identified 19-year-old Joe-Isaac Lee Yanez as a person of interest. Yanez was arrested on December 10, 2023, after a police chase and standoff. A search of his residence reportedly turned up stolen firearms and ammunition that matched the calibers used in the attack, and an Instagram video linked to Yanez appeared to show moments leading up to and after the shooting.

As of March 2024 no formal charges had been filed against Yanez or anyone else, and the investigation remained active. The Converse Police Department is working with the Texas Rangers, the FBI, and the Secret Service on the case. Derry was a nursing student and former college athlete; her family remembers her for a vibrant personality and positive impact, and they have announced plans for a foundation and a scholarship in her honor.
