On October 29, 2023, 31-year-old Jose Gerardo Morales Zavala was shot and killed inside Las Alazanas, a bar in the 2800 block of Amarillo Boulevard East in Amarillo, Texas. Officers arrived around 10:20 p.m. and found Zavala deceased on the bar floor after reports of a shooting.

Investigators say Zavala had an altercation earlier that evening with 18-year-old Daniel Martinez. Court documents and surveillance footage indicate Martinez left the bar after the dispute, returned shortly thereafter and shot Zavala. A witness who knew Martinez corroborated that sequence. Martinez fled to his residence but was taken into custody by the Amarillo Police Department SWAT team after a brief standoff and booked into the Potter County Detention Center on a murder charge; bond was set at $400,000.

Reports note Martinez was on probation for an aggravated robbery conviction from November 2022, to which he pleaded guilty in March 2023.
