On August 14, 2023, a relative who could not reach them discovered the bodies of 66-year-old Lilia Fernandez Ortiz and her 43-year-old son Alejandro Arrellano-Fernandez inside their Lewisville, Texas home. Both had sustained gunshot wounds to the head and investigators believe they had been deceased for several days before being found. Surveillance from a neighbor shows two men approaching Alejandro outside the residence on August 10; the footage depicts the men shoving him to the ground, one drawing a firearm, a brief struggle off-camera, a brass casing rolling into view, and then a man dragging an unresponsive Alejandro into the garage. Lilia Fernandez Ortiz was located in the kitchen, where she appeared to have been preparing breakfast, and both victims appeared to have been executed in a similar manner.
Authorities arrested 37-year-old Samuel Atinafu Melkamu on August 16 and 51-year-old Jawara Oji Black on August 21; both face two counts of capital murder. Neighbors said Melkamu was known locally for doing small jobs and had previously lived at the Ramblewood home; one witness reported Melkamu telling police in July he was owed money for work. The relationship between the suspects and the victims and any motive have not been disclosed.
Did anyone in Lewisville know the victims or see activity around the Ramblewood home that week?
