Elmer Gene Richards, 54, of Center, Texas, was found dead at his Center residence on July 31, 2023. Local authorities and the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office reviewed the circumstances and announced the death was being investigated as a homicide. Initial reports said family members or neighbors had become concerned after not hearing from him and discovered his body at the home. Authorities did not immediately disclose the cause of death, but investigators searched for signs of a struggle and treated the scene as potentially criminal.

In early August there were reports of at least one arrest connected to the case, though the identity of any suspect and the exact charges were not released. Law enforcement, including the Texas Rangers, continued interviews, forensic work and follow-up leads while the community awaited clearer answers. If anyone knew Elmer, his movements in late July, or has information that could help investigators, please come forward.
