Ricardo Escobar Cardona, 35, died on July 3, 2023, after being shot during an altercation at a residence on Spurs Nation Drive on Corpus Christi’s South Side. Cardona was taken to Bay Area Hospital and succumbed to his injuries later that day.

The suspect is 37-year-old Johnathan Solarte, a former Univision sports anchor. Solarte was arrested early on July 3 after flagging down police and was charged with murder. Solarte has said Cardona barged into his home and threatened him, and that he shot Cardona in response. The Corpus Christi Police Department described the incident as a fight that led to the shooting. The nature of the relationship between Cardona and Solarte and the exact sequence of events remain unclear.
