On June 11, 2023, 29-year-old Keyan Devon Jernigan and his father, 49-year-old Duane Jernigan, were fatally shot outside a residence on Roberson Road in Hallsville, Texas. The Harrison County Sheriff’s Office responded to reports of gunfire around 7:36 p.m. and found both men deceased from apparent gunshot wounds.

Investigators identified 26-year-old Darius Celedra Gates Jr. as a suspect. Officers say Gates fled in a black Chevrolet Tahoe when they tried to stop him, sparking a pursuit into Gregg County that ended on Fredonia Street just off Highway 80 in Longview, where he was taken into custody. Gates was booked into the Harrison County Jail and later indicted by a grand jury on capital murder charges alleging both deaths occurred during the same criminal transaction; other charges include evading arrest with a vehicle and unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon.

Friends and family mourned the Jernigans; a celebration of life for Keyan was held June 17, 2023, at Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Marshall. If anyone knew Keyan or has information about the shootings, please come forward.
