On May 31, 2023, 19-year-old Jonathan Rodriguez was fatally shot on Texas Avenue near Third Street in Texas City, Texas. Multiple 911 callers reported the shooting and one provided a vehicle description. Officers stopped a vehicle and found Rodriguez inside, critically injured; he was taken to HCA Houston Healthcare Mainland Medical Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Rodriguez graduated from Dickinson Alternative Education in 2022 after completing an accelerated program under Principal David Mac McConnell, finishing 30 courses in a year with plans to attend college in the fall to study anesthesiology. His family and the community expressed deep grief and frustration about rising violence in Texas City. Principal McConnell started a fundraiser to help the family with funeral expenses and to honor Rodriguez’s wish for a traditional Native American mausoleum burial.
