On May 23, 2023, in Nash, Texas, 46-year-old Reuben Olalde was killed along with his wife, Aida Garcia, their adult daughter Lisbet, and their five-year-old son Oliver. The family’s 18-year-old son, Cesar Olalde, was arrested at the scene and charged with capital murder in connection with the deaths.

The killings were discovered after Lisbet’s coworker, worried by her absence, went to the family home on Lemon Acres and forced entry with a family member. They found bloodstains, encountered Cesar, and reported he pointed a firearm at them while claiming he had killed his family because he believed they were cannibals. Officers later found the four victims in a bathroom and documented multiple spent cartridge casings and blood spatter indicating the victims had been shot in various locations and then moved.

Cesar was held at the Bi-State Jail in Texarkana on $10 million bail and charged with capital murder of multiple persons and capital murder of a person under 10 years of age. Defense counsel has raised questions about Cesar’s competency, prompting appointment of an independent expert for evaluation; the state’s decision on seeking the death penalty had not been announced.
