On May 6, 2023, eight-year-old Sofia Mendoza and her eleven-year-old sister Daniela were killed in the mass shooting at Allen Premium Outlets in Allen, Texas. Both girls attended Cox Elementary School in Sachse—Sofia was in second grade and Daniela in fourth—and their principal described them as rays of sunshine who brought joy to others. Their mother, Ilda, was injured and remained hospitalized after the attack.

The shooter, identified as 33-year-old Mauricio Garcia, opened fire while wearing tactical gear and carrying multiple weapons. He was shot and killed at the scene by a responding police officer. Investigators reported possible ties between Garcia and extremist ideologies, pointing to his social media activity and insignia found on his clothing.

A vigil at Cross Church in Wylie drew family, friends and community members to mourn the sisters. The Mendoza family released a statement thanking medical staff, first responders and the community, and said the girls were their entire world. If anyone knew Daniela or Sofia or has information about their lives and activities at school or the mall, please share what you remember.
