On the night of April 28, 2023, 21-year-old Diana Velazquez Alvarado was killed at her home in Cleveland, Texas, during a mass shooting that also claimed four other lives. Neighbors had gone to ask 38-year-old Francisco Oropeza to stop firing an AR-15 rifle in his yard because the noise was upsetting a baby; he allegedly refused and then entered their home and began shooting. Authorities described the scene as execution-style, saying all the victims were shot from the neck up.

Diana, a Honduran immigrant and mother who had come to the United States to train as a cosmetologist, was found shielding several children who survived the attack. Julisa Molina Rivera is also reported to have died protecting children. Oropeza fled the area, prompting a four-day manhunt that ended when he was found hiding in Conroe, Texas; his partner, Divimara Nava, was arrested on hindering-apprehension charges for allegedly helping him evade capture.
