On April 28, 2023, in Cleveland, Texas, 31-year-old Julisa Molina Rivera was shot and killed in an attack that left five people dead. The shooting began after a neighbor, Francisco Oropeza, was reportedly firing an AR-15 in his yard late at night; Rivera’s household had gone to ask him to stop because the noise was waking an infant. Oropeza allegedly refused and shortly afterward entered Rivera’s home and opened fire.

Rivera and four others from Honduras — Sonia Argentina Guzman (25), Diana Velazquez Alvarado (21), Jose Jonathan Casarez (18), and Daniel Enrique Laso (9) — were found shot above the neck, described as execution-style. Some women were discovered lying over surviving children, apparently shielding them. A massive manhunt ended when 38-year-old Oropeza was arrested May 2, 2023, hiding in a closet near Conroe, Texas. He was charged with five counts of first-degree murder and later indicted on a capital murder charge; bond had been set at $7.5 million. Oropeza’s partner, Divimara Nava, was arrested on a hindering-apprehension charge, and authorities said others may face charges for assisting him.
