In the early hours of February 25, 2023, Damien Oneal Jackson, 30, was shot in the parking lot of the Whataburger at 2321 S. Jefferson Avenue in Mount Pleasant, Texas. Officers arrived about 2:18 a.m.; Jackson was treated on scene and taken to Titus Regional Medical Center, where he was later pronounced dead. Investigators say an altercation inside the restaurant involved multiple people, and those involved were told to leave; as they exited, Jackson was shot.

Police interviewed several witnesses and identified a suspect. At about 9:20 a.m. that morning authorities arrested 18-year-old Kentravion Jajuan Evans; he was charged with murder under Texas Penal Code 19.02 and booked into the Titus County Jail. No other suspects were reported outstanding at the time of the arrest. An obituary for Jackson was published and family and friends have mourned his death.
