I’ve been thinking a lot about the aftermath of Marcos Orta’s tragic shooting and how it’s been affecting his school community. It's incredibly tough for the students and staff at Galena Park High School who are dealing with this shocking loss. From what I’ve read and heard, Marcos was well-liked, and his absence is felt deeply.
I've seen online that they’ve set up counselors at the school, but I can’t help but wonder about the long-term emotional impacts on Marcos’s friends and fellow students. High school can be such a challenging time with so much going on, and having to deal with the trauma of losing a peer in such a violent way has got to be incredibly difficult.
I'm curious to know how the school’s been addressing this moving forward. Are there programs or support groups being organized to help these kids cope, not just now but in the months to come? It’s imperative that schools have a plan for supporting students through grief and trauma beyond the immediate aftermath.
If anyone has experience dealing with this in their own communities or knows any best practices, it’d be great to hear about them. My heart goes out to everyone affected, and I truly hope they find the support they need in this trying time.
